Details
A weathered slab of desert rock, hollowed underneath into a cool, shaded chamber. The Sandstone Shelter reads like a sun-baked outcrop that has been sitting in the sand for a hundred years, with a broad, low profile that settles into substrate instead of perching on top of it. Inside, there is real room to retreat, rest, and disappear from view. It gives an arid or bioactive enclosure the one thing a flat layout always lacks: somewhere convincing to hide.
This is a 3D printed rock shelter designed as a naturalistic hide for terrariums, vivariums, and desert-style enclosures. The exterior is sculpted with a detailed stone surface, irregular ridges, shallow fissures, and the uneven grain of eroded sandstone, so it blends into a scaped layout rather than reading as a molded plastic ornament. The underside is hollowed into a spacious interior chamber with an entrance opening at ground level, giving your animals a genuine shaded retreat instead of a decorative bump in the landscape.
The design comes from novYTerra, whose terrarium work is built around real habitat structure, and CurioPrinta prints and sells it under a commercial license. The broad footprint and low center of gravity are the point: the shelter sits flat and stable on substrate, so it stays where you put it. Set it directly on sand or soil, bank substrate up against the sides to sink it into the terrain, or nestle it between hardscape rock and dry wood so only the weathered top breaks the surface. Under a basking lamp it doubles as a cool retreat on the shaded side of the enclosure, and in a planted or bioactive build it anchors the ground layer while moss, leaf litter, and low plants grow in around the base.
Which version you choose depends on your habitat. The PLA Dry Model suits arid and desert setups, dioramas, tabletop terrain, and shelf display, the natural home for keepers of leopard geckos, bearded dragons, and uromastyx, along with invertebrates such as tarantulas, scorpions, temperate isopods, and millipedes. The PETG Wet Model is the one to pick for misted, high-humidity, bioactive, submerged, or strongly UV-lit enclosures, including tropical builds housing crested geckos and day geckos or invertebrates such as tropical isopods and springtails. Naming a species here is about matching the right version to the right habitat, not a suitability claim: compare the entrance opening, interior height, and overall footprint against the adult size and behavior of your specific animals before use.
You receive the Sandstone Shelter in the size you select, printed unpainted in a single solid filament color, and shipped as two printed sections that fit together to form the complete shelter. Substrate, plants, hardscape, animals, lighting, and the enclosure itself are not included. Because each piece is printed to order, the texture and layer character will be slightly unique to yours.

🧱 Material Options
The Sandstone Shelter is offered in three sizes, so you can match it to your enclosure:
PETG Wet Model
Choose this version for high-humidity, misted, bioactive, partially submerged, or aquarium setups, and for enclosures running high-output UV lighting. It is printed in PETG and supplied completely unpainted. CurioPrinta uses PETG for these conditions rather than standard PLA because PETG handles prolonged moisture and UV exposure far better than PLA does. That is a material choice, not a guarantee: continuous high-output UV can still gradually embrittle PETG over time, and PETG is not permanently waterproof, indestructible, chemically inert, or universally suitable for every animal or water condition.
PLA Dry Model
Choose this version for arid and desert terrariums, dioramas, tabletop terrain, shelf display, and general home decor. PLA versions are not recommended for submerged aquarium use, constantly wet or heavily misted enclosures, or setups with strong UV lighting. Pick PLA only when the shelter will stay dry and out of intense UV. If your desert enclosure runs a high-output UVB lamp, the PETG Wet Model is the better choice even though the habitat itself is dry.
🔧 Setup, Use & Care
For terrarium, vivarium & paludarium use
🌡️ Verify the material and design suit your habitat’s temperature, humidity, lighting, and species before use.
🔥 Keep it away from direct contact with high-output heat lamps, heating elements, and other intense heat sources.
🧱 Set it on a level, compacted base so it cannot tip, rock, or settle if an animal burrows underneath it.
🦎 Check the entrance opening and interior height against your animal’s adult size, not its current size.
🧹 Inspect regularly for wear, damage, trapped waste, or areas that are difficult to clean.
📘 Let qualified, species-specific husbandry guidance take priority over general product suggestions.
For submerged and aquarium use (PETG Wet Model)
💧 Rinse the shelter thoroughly with clean water before placing it in an aquarium.
🚫 Avoid soaps, detergents, household cleaners, and unapproved chemical treatments.
🔍 Inspect it before use and confirm the opening is appropriately sized for the animals in the tank.
🪨 Position it securely so it cannot shift, tip, trap an animal, or press hard against the glass.
🔁 Check it periodically as part of normal maintenance, and remove it if it becomes damaged, develops sharp areas, or no longer sits securely.
🐟 Introduce any new decoration thoughtfully and observe your animals after installation.
Cleaning
For the PETG Wet Model, rinse with clean water and use a soft brush when needed. Avoid soaps, bleach, solvents, abrasive cleaners, boiling water, dishwashers, and high-temperature cleaning. Allow it to dry completely if it is removed for long-term storage. For the PLA Dry Model, dust with a soft brush or cloth, use a lightly damp cloth when appropriate, and keep it away from intense heat.
📐 Dimensions
Approximate dimensions (Length × Width × Height), imperial first with metric in parentheses:
Size 1 4.7" × 4.1" × 1.6" (120 × 105 × 41 mm)
Size 2 6.2" × 5.4" × 2.1" (157 × 137 × 53 mm)
XL 8.0" × 7.5" × 2.4" (202 × 191 × 60 mm)
Because each item is individually 3D printed, minor dimensional variation may occur.
🎨 Color and Appearance
The shelter is printed in a solid-color filament and is not painted. Choosing a sand, tan, or stone-toned filament is what gives it a natural desert look, rather than any applied paint or coating. Some listing photos may show the shelter painted as a finishing example only; your piece ships unfinished.
Colors may look slightly different in person because of lighting, photography, monitor settings, and filament batches. The appearance can also shift under strong terrarium lighting or when submerged. An exact color match is not promised.
🖨️ About 3D Printing
This item is created using FDM 3D printing technology. Fine layer lines, small seams, slight texture changes, and minor variations are normal characteristics of the process. These details are not considered defects and make each piece slightly unique. Support-contact marks may appear in hidden or recessed areas, and minor cosmetic differences can occur between prints because each shelter is individually produced rather than injection molded.
🛠️ Made to Order
Each shelter is printed individually after you order, so minor differences between pieces are normal. Production time is separate from shipping time.
🧩 Every size prints in two sections and ships as two separate printed pieces that fit together to form the complete shelter, so you position and settle it in your enclosure yourself.
🎨 The shelter ships unfinished and unpainted in the filament color you select.
⚠️ Safety and Compatibility
This product is decorative habitat decor, not a toy. You are responsible for deciding whether the size, material, entrance opening, surfaces, and placement are appropriate for your specific animals and habitat. Animals should not be allowed to chew or ingest the material, and the item should be removed if it becomes damaged, as small parts or broken pieces may present a hazard. Because the shelter is a hide, make sure it is seated on a stable, level base so it cannot shift or settle onto an animal that burrows beneath it. CurioPrinta cannot account for every species, animal behavior, enclosure design, water chemistry, temperature, or maintenance routine, so please confirm suitability for your own setup before use.
CurioPrinta does not describe this product as "aquarium safe," "reptile safe," "non-toxic," or guaranteed for any specific animal. Naming a species anywhere in this listing is for search relevance and design context, not a compatibility or safety claim.

❓ FAQ
💧 Can this be placed underwater?
Yes, when you choose the PETG Wet Model. PETG is the material CurioPrinta uses for submerged and high-humidity decor because it handles prolonged water exposure better than standard PLA. Rinse it first, position it securely, and check it as part of normal maintenance.
🎨 Is the aquarium version painted?
No. The PETG Wet Model ships completely unpainted in a solid filament color. Any painted images are finishing examples only.
🧱 Can I order this in PLA?
Yes, as the PLA Dry Model for arid terrariums, dioramas, tabletop terrain, and dry display. PLA is not recommended for submerged aquarium use, constantly wet enclosures, or strong UV lighting.
☀️ My desert setup is dry but runs a strong UVB lamp. Which version?
Choose the PETG Wet Model. Despite the name, it is also the version for high-UV enclosures, because PETG holds up to high-output UV far better than PLA. It is not immune, since continuous UV can gradually embrittle any plastic over time, but it is the more durable choice under bright lamps.
🧩 Does it arrive in one piece?
No. Every size prints in two sections and ships as two separate printed pieces that fit together into the complete shelter. Nothing is glued or permanently joined before shipping.
🖌️ Can I paint it myself?
You can, but for anything going into an animal habitat you must independently research and confirm that any paint or coating is suitable for your intended species and conditions. CurioPrinta does not recommend customer-applied paint for submerged use and ships the shelter unfinished.
🧹 How should I clean it?
Rinse the PETG Wet Model with clean water and use a soft brush if needed. Avoid soaps, bleach, solvents, abrasives, boiling water, and dishwashers. Dust the PLA Dry Model with a soft brush or a lightly damp cloth.
📷 Will it look exactly like the photographs?
It will be very close, but small differences in texture, layer lines, and color are normal for made-to-order 3D prints, and appearance can shift under terrarium lighting or when submerged.
🐍 Is it suitable for my specific reptile, amphibian, invertebrate, or fish?
That depends on your animal and setup, so please compare the listed dimensions, the entrance opening, and the interior height against your species and follow qualified husbandry guidance. CurioPrinta cannot guarantee compatibility with any specific animal.
