Details
Two weathered tree trunks rise against the back of the enclosure, their bark split, ridged, and layered the way real forest wood ages. Stepped platforms sit at different heights along each trunk, and a natural knot hole opens into a shaded pocket where a small animal can tuck away and watch the room. Because the two trunks are separate pieces, you can set them close together for a dense wooded wall or spread them apart to frame a planted center. It gives a flat glass pane the depth, grip, and vertical structure of a real forest edge.
📖 Full Product Description
Split Forest is a 3D printed background made up of two separate tree trunk sections designed to stand against the rear pane of a terrarium, vivarium, or paludarium. Each trunk is sculpted with deep, detailed bark: vertical fissures, raised ridges, and irregular growth texture that reads as real weathered wood rather than a smooth molded panel. Designed by novYTerra and printed and sold by CurioPrinta under a commercial license, it is built to work as usable habitat structure, not just a backdrop.
Each trunk carries several platforms set at staggered heights, giving arboreal animals a route to climb, perch, bask, and rest above the substrate. A natural knot hole opens into the trunk to form a sheltered retreat and lookout point. The bark texture runs across the whole surface, so climbing species have something to grip instead of sliding on bare glass, and the recesses between ridges make natural spots to tuck moss, ferns, epiphytes, and trailing plants that grow into the wood over time.
The split, two-piece layout is the most useful part of the design. You can butt the trunks together into one continuous wooded wall, mirror them at either end of a wide enclosure, or angle them into a corner. That flexibility lets one size work across a range of tank widths, and it makes rearranging your layout simple later on without buying a new background.
The naturalistic forest styling suits a broad mix of keepers. In a misted, planted, or bioactive build, the PETG Wet Model fits high-humidity residents such as dart frogs, tree frogs, crested geckos, and day geckos, along with humidity-loving invertebrates like tropical isopods. In a drier, lightly misted or arid build, the PLA Dry Model suits keepers of animals such as jumping spiders, tarantulas, and millipedes. Match the version to the humidity your habitat actually runs at, and compare the platform sizes, the knot hole opening, and the overall footprint against the adult size and behavior of your specific animals before use.
It also works well outside a live enclosure. The same trunks make convincing forest terrain for dioramas, model scenery, tabletop gaming boards, and shelf display, where the PLA Dry Model is the sensible choice.
You receive the complete Split Forest background, both trunk sections, in the size you select. It ships unfinished: printed in a single solid filament color with no paint, sealant, or coating applied.

🧱 Material Options
This background is offered in two versions across all four sizes, so you can match it to your enclosure:
PETG Wet Model
Choose this version for high-humidity, misted, bioactive, or partially submerged setups such as tropical vivariums and paludariums, and for enclosures running high-output UV lighting. It is printed in PETG and supplied completely unpainted. CurioPrinta uses PETG for these conditions rather than standard PLA because PETG handles prolonged moisture and UV exposure considerably better. That is a material choice, not a guarantee: continuous high-output UV can still gradually embrittle PETG over time, and PETG is not permanently waterproof, indestructible, chemically inert, or universally suitable for every animal or water condition.
PLA Dry Model
Choose this version for arid terrariums, dry display enclosures, dioramas, model scenery, tabletop terrain, and general home decor. PLA versions are not recommended for submerged aquarium use, constantly wet or heavily misted enclosures, or setups with strong UV lighting. Pick PLA only when the background will stay dry and out of intense UV.
🔧 Setup, Use & Care
For terrarium, vivarium & paludarium use
🌡️ Verify that the material and design suit your habitat’s temperature, humidity, lighting, and species before installing.
🔥 Keep the trunks away from direct contact with high-output heat lamps, ceramic emitters, heating elements, and other intense heat sources.
🧱 Position each trunk securely against the back or corner so it cannot tip, slide, or fall, particularly in the taller sizes.
🦎 Check the platform widths and the knot hole opening against your animal’s adult size and climbing behavior.
🧹 Inspect regularly for wear, damage, trapped waste, or recesses that are difficult to clean.
📘 Let qualified, species-specific husbandry guidance take priority over general product suggestions.
For misted, partially submerged & aquarium use (PETG Wet Model)
💧 Rinse thoroughly with clean water before placing it in a wet or partially submerged setup.
🚫 Avoid soaps, detergents, household cleaners, and unapproved chemical treatments.
🔍 Inspect the piece before use and confirm every opening is appropriately sized for the animals in the enclosure.
⚖️ Position it so it cannot shift, tip, trap an animal, or press hard against the glass.
🔁 Check it periodically as part of normal maintenance, and remove it if it becomes damaged, develops sharp areas, or no longer sits securely.
🐟 Introduce any new decoration thoughtfully and observe your animals after installation.
Cleaning
For the PETG Wet Model, rinse with clean water and use a soft brush to work bark texture and platform recesses when needed. Avoid soaps, bleach, solvents, abrasive cleaners, boiling water, dishwashers, and high-temperature cleaning. Allow it to dry completely if it is removed for long-term storage. For the PLA Dry Model, dust with a soft brush or cloth, use a lightly damp cloth when appropriate, and keep it away from intense heat.
📐 Dimensions
Approximate dimensions of the assembled background (Width × Depth × Height), imperial first with metric in parentheses:
S1 3.7" × 1.8" × 5.7" (95 × 45 × 145 mm)
S2 5.7" × 2.6" × 8.4" (145 × 65 × 213 mm)
S3 7.5" × 2.6" × 7.5" (190 × 65 × 190 mm)
XL 15.4" × 4.2" × 23.2" (390 × 107 × 590 mm)
S3 is proportioned differently from the other sizes, giving a wider, squarer panel rather than a tall narrow one. Because the two trunks are separate pieces, the width listed reflects them positioned together; spacing them apart will cover more of your back wall.
Because each item is individually 3D printed, minor dimensional variation may occur.
🎨 Color and Appearance
The background is printed in a solid-color filament and is not painted. It ships unfinished, with no paint, stain, sealant, or coating applied. Some listing photos may show the trunks painted; those are finishing examples only, and your piece ships unpainted.
Colors may look slightly different in person because of lighting, photography, monitor settings, and filament batches. Appearance can also shift under terrarium or aquarium lighting and when the surface is wet or submerged. Natural-looking variation comes from selecting an appropriate filament color rather than from applied paint, and an exact color match is not promised.
🖨️ About 3D Printing
This item is created using FDM 3D printing technology. Fine layer lines, small seams, slight texture changes, and minor variations are normal characteristics of the process. On a heavily textured bark surface these tend to blend into the sculpt rather than stand out. Support-contact marks may appear in hidden or recessed areas, such as beneath platforms and inside the knot hole, and minor cosmetic differences can occur between prints because each piece is individually produced rather than injection molded. These details are not considered defects.
🛠️ Made to Order
Each background is printed individually after you order, so small differences between pieces are normal. Production time is separate from shipping time.
🧩 Every size ships as two separate trunk sections, which is how the design is intended to be used: you arrange and space them yourself inside the enclosure.
📦 The XL size is too large to print in one go and arrives as six separate printed pieces that fit together to build the two full-height trunks. It ships unassembled, so plan for some assembly and positioning on your end.
⚠️ Safety and Compatibility
This product is decorative habitat decor, not a toy. You are responsible for deciding whether the size, material, platforms, openings, surfaces, and placement are appropriate for your specific animals and habitat. Animals should not be allowed to chew or ingest the material, and the item should be removed if it becomes damaged, as small parts or broken pieces may present a hazard. Taller sizes carry more weight up high, so make sure each trunk is stable and cannot fall. CurioPrinta cannot account for every species, animal behavior, enclosure design, water chemistry, temperature, or maintenance routine, so please confirm suitability for your own setup before use.
CurioPrinta does not describe this product as "aquarium safe," "reptile safe," "non-toxic," or guaranteed for any specific animal. Naming a species anywhere in this listing is for search relevance and design context, not a compatibility or safety claim.

❓ FAQ
💧 Can this be placed underwater?
Choose the PETG Wet Model for wet, misted, or partially submerged use. PETG is the material CurioPrinta uses for these conditions because it handles prolonged water exposure better than standard PLA. Rinse it first, position it securely, and check it as part of normal maintenance.
🎨 Is the wet version painted?
No. The PETG Wet Model ships completely unpainted in a solid filament color, with no sealant or coating. Any painted images are finishing examples only.
🧱 Can I order this in PLA?
Yes, as the PLA Dry Model, for arid terrariums, dioramas, model scenery, tabletop terrain, and dry display. PLA is not recommended for submerged use, constantly wet or heavily misted enclosures, or strong UV lighting.
☀️ Which version should I pick for a UV-lit setup?
The PETG Wet Model. PETG holds up to high-output UV considerably better than PLA. It is not immune, since continuous UV can gradually embrittle any plastic over time, but it is the more durable choice for brightly lit enclosures.
🌳 Is this one piece or two?
Two. The design is a split background made of two separate tree trunks, so you can space, mirror, or angle them to suit your enclosure rather than being locked into one fixed panel.
🧩 Does the XL size come assembled?
No. The XL prints across multiple plates and arrives as six separate printed pieces that fit together into the two full-height trunks. You assemble and position them in your enclosure. The smaller sizes arrive as the two trunk sections only.
🖌️ Can I paint it myself?
You can, but for anything going into an animal habitat you must independently research and confirm that any paint or coating is suitable for your intended species and conditions. CurioPrinta does not recommend customer-applied paint for wet or submerged use and ships the background unfinished.
🧹 How should I clean it?
Rinse the PETG Wet Model with clean water and use a soft brush on the bark texture if needed. Avoid soaps, bleach, solvents, abrasives, boiling water, and dishwashers. Dust the PLA Dry Model with a soft brush or a lightly damp cloth.
📷 Will it look exactly like the photographs?
It will be very close, but small differences in texture, layer lines, and color are normal for made-to-order 3D prints, and appearance can shift under enclosure lighting or when the surface is wet.
🕷️ Is it suitable for my specific reptile, amphibian, spider, or invertebrate?
That depends on your animal and setup, so please compare the platform sizes, the knot hole opening, and the overall dimensions against your species and follow qualified husbandry guidance. CurioPrinta cannot guarantee compatibility with any specific animal.
