Details
Twisted roots climb the full height of the enclosure, knotting together into open ledges where a gecko can perch and moss can spill over the edge. This is a back wall and a climbing frame in one piece, built to look like the hollowed trunk of an old tree that grew around its own branches. Open shelves give your animals real levels to move between, and give you somewhere to tuck plants, cork, and leaf litter so the whole layout fills in over time.
📖 Full Product Description
This is a tall 3D printed background designed to stand against the rear wall of a terrarium, vivarium, or paludarium. The face is sculpted as a mass of gnarled roots and weathered branches wrapping around a wood-grain back panel, with cut branch ends, burls, and knots breaking up the surface so it reads as real aged timber rather than a flat printed sheet.
What sets it apart from a standard backwall is the structure. Open bays are set into the root work at staggered heights, each with a solid floor, so the piece works as usable vertical terrain instead of decoration alone. Arboreal animals get a ladder of landings and shaded recesses to move through. Bioactive keepers get planting shelves for moss, ferns, epiphytes, and trailing plants that will grow across the roots and soften the piece as the enclosure matures. The recessed bays also hold small cork rounds, magnetic ledges, feeding dishes, or a hide.
The naturalistic root styling suits a wide range of keepers. For a misted, planted, or bioactive build, the PETG Wet Model fits high-humidity residents such as crested geckos, gargoyle geckos, day geckos, dart frogs, and tree frogs, along with humidity-loving invertebrates like tropical isopods and springtails. For a drier build, the PLA Dry Model suits arid terrariums, display cases, and dioramas, and keepers who house animals such as many tarantulas, temperate isopods, and millipedes. Match the version to the humidity of your habitat, and always compare the shelf openings and ledge depths against the size and climbing behavior of your specific animals before use.
An original CurioPrinta design, printed in our own shop. The piece stands 20 inches tall and ships in two stacking sections that line up into the full column, which keeps it manageable to handle and position inside a tall enclosure. You receive the background only, printed unpainted in a single solid color. Plants, substrate, animals, lighting, and the enclosure itself are not included.

🧱 Material Options
This background is offered in two versions so you can match it to your enclosure:
PETG Wet Model
Choose this version for high-humidity, misted, bioactive, or paludarium setups, and for enclosures running high-output UV lighting. It is printed in PETG and supplied completely unpainted. CurioPrinta uses PETG for these conditions rather than standard PLA because PETG stands up to prolonged moisture and UV exposure far better than PLA. That is a material choice, not a guarantee: continuous high-output UV can still gradually embrittle PETG over time, and PETG is not permanently waterproof, indestructible, chemically inert, or universally suitable for every animal or set of conditions.
PLA Dry Model
Choose this version for arid terrariums, dioramas, display cases, tabletop terrain, and general home decor. PLA versions are not recommended for submerged use, constantly wet or heavily misted enclosures, or setups with strong UV lighting. Pick PLA only when the piece will stay dry and out of intense UV.
🔧 Setup, Use & Care
Positioning the two sections
🧩 The background arrives as two printed sections that stack into the full column. Dry fit them before the enclosure is planted so you can see how the root work lines up.
🧱 Set the lower section on a level base and seat the upper section squarely on top so the column cannot rock, lean, or tip forward.
🔩 Secure it against the rear wall or bury the base in substrate if your animals will be climbing on it. A tall piece carrying weight should never be free standing.
For high-humidity, misted & bioactive use (PETG Wet Model)
💧 Rinse thoroughly with clean water before it goes into the enclosure.
🚫 Avoid soaps, detergents, household cleaners, and unapproved chemical treatments.
🔍 Inspect it before use and confirm the shelf openings and ledge depths are appropriate for the animals that will be climbing on them.
🔁 Check it periodically as part of normal maintenance, and remove it if it becomes damaged, develops sharp areas, or no longer sits securely.
For terrarium, vivarium & paludarium use
🌡️ Verify the material and design suit your habitat’s temperature, humidity, lighting, and species.
🔥 Keep it away from direct contact with high-output heat lamps, heating elements, and other intense heat sources.
🦎 Check every shelf opening and gap against your animal’s adult size, and watch for spots where a small animal could become wedged.
🌿 Fill the bays gradually. Adding plants and cork over time lets you see how your animals actually use each level.
🧹 Inspect regularly for wear, damage, trapped waste, or areas that are hard to clean.
📘 Let qualified, species-specific husbandry guidance take priority over general product suggestions.
Cleaning
For the PETG Wet Model, rinse with clean water and use a soft brush on the root texture when needed. Avoid soaps, bleach, solvents, abrasive cleaners, boiling water, dishwashers, and high-temperature cleaning. Let it dry completely if it is removed for long-term storage. For the PLA Dry Model, dust with a soft brush or cloth, use a lightly damp cloth when appropriate, and keep it away from intense heat.
📐 Dimensions
Approximate assembled dimensions (Width × Depth × Height), imperial first with metric in parentheses:
Assembled 9" × 5.9" × 20" (229 × 150 × 508 mm)
🧩 Ships as two stacking sections that assemble to the full 20 inch height.
Because each item is individually 3D printed, minor dimensional variation may occur. Measure your enclosure before ordering, including the door opening and any lip or frame the piece has to clear.
🎨 Color and Appearance
The background is printed in a solid-color filament and is not painted. Some listing photos show it painted or finished; those are examples of what is possible, and your piece ships unpainted in a single color.
Colors may look slightly different in person because of lighting, photography, monitor settings, and filament batches. Appearance can also shift under terrarium lighting or once the piece is misted and planted. Natural-looking variation comes from selecting an appropriate filament color rather than from applied paint, and an exact color match is not promised.
🖨️ About 3D Printing
This item is created using FDM 3D printing technology. Fine layer lines, small seams, slight texture changes, and minor variations are normal characteristics of the process. On a deeply sculpted piece like this one, layer lines actually work in its favor and read as grain across the root surfaces. Support-contact marks may appear in hidden or recessed areas, and minor cosmetic differences can occur between prints because each background is individually produced rather than injection molded. These details are not considered defects.
🛠️ Made to Order
Each background is printed individually after you order, so small differences between pieces are normal. Production time is separate from shipping time.
🧩 This piece is tall enough that it prints in two sections. It ships as two separate printed pieces that stack into the full column, so you position and secure them in your enclosure yourself. It does not arrive glued or fastened together.
⚠️ Safety and Compatibility
This product is decorative habitat decor, not a toy. You are responsible for deciding whether the size, material, shelf openings, surfaces, and placement are appropriate for your specific animals and habitat. Because this piece is tall and animals may climb on it, secure it so it cannot tip, slide, or fall. Animals should not be allowed to chew or ingest the material, and the item should be removed if it becomes damaged, as small parts or broken pieces may present a hazard. CurioPrinta cannot account for every species, animal behavior, enclosure design, humidity level, temperature, or maintenance routine, so please confirm suitability for your own setup before use.
CurioPrinta does not describe this product as "reptile safe," "aquarium safe," "non-toxic," or guaranteed for any specific animal. Naming a species anywhere in this listing is for search relevance and design context, not a compatibility or safety claim.

❓ FAQ
🧩 Does it come assembled?
No. It ships as two printed sections that stack into the full 20 inch column. There is no glue or hardware involved, you seat the top section on the bottom one and secure the piece in your enclosure.
🦎 Can my animals actually climb on the shelves?
The bays are built with solid floors and are meant to be used as levels rather than just looked at. How much weight and traffic that means depends entirely on your species, so compare the ledge depths and openings to your animals and secure the piece before they are introduced.
💧 Can it go in a misted or bioactive enclosure?
Yes, when you choose the PETG Wet Model. PETG is the material CurioPrinta uses for wet and high-humidity decor because it handles prolonged moisture better than standard PLA. Rinse it first, position it securely, and check it as part of normal maintenance.
🐟 Can it be submerged?
The PETG Wet Model is the version for water contact, and it works in the wet end of a paludarium. It was designed as a tall terrarium background rather than an aquarium piece, so check the height and footprint against your tank before ordering.
🎨 Is the wet version painted?
No. The PETG Wet Model ships completely unpainted in a solid filament color. Any painted images are finishing examples only.
🧱 Can I order this in PLA?
Yes, as the PLA Dry Model for arid terrariums, dioramas, display cases, and dry decor. PLA is not recommended for wet or heavily misted enclosures or strong UV lighting.
☀️ Which version should I pick for a UV-lit setup?
Choose the PETG Wet Model. PETG holds up to high-output UV far better than PLA. It is not immune, since continuous UV can gradually embrittle any plastic over time, but it is the more durable choice for brightly lit enclosures.
🖌️ Can I paint it myself?
You can, and the root texture takes a dry brush well. For anything going into an animal habitat you must independently research and confirm that any paint or coating is suitable for your intended species and conditions. CurioPrinta does not recommend customer-applied paint for wet setups and ships the piece unpainted.
🧹 How should I clean it?
Rinse the PETG Wet Model with clean water and use a soft brush if needed. Avoid soaps, bleach, solvents, abrasives, boiling water, and dishwashers. Dust the PLA Dry Model with a soft brush or a lightly damp cloth.
📷 Will it look exactly like the photographs?
It will be very close, but small differences in texture, layer lines, and color are normal for made-to-order 3D prints, and appearance can shift under terrarium lighting or once the piece is planted.
🐢 Is it suitable for my specific reptile, amphibian, or invertebrate?
That depends on your animal and setup, so please compare the dimensions, ledges, and openings against your species and follow qualified husbandry guidance. CurioPrinta cannot guarantee compatibility with any specific animal.
